Mental Health

A very overlooked but important part of our daily health and living is our mental health. Mental health is not just a series of mental disorders like Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) or schizophrenia. Our mental health is much more and involves our, “thoughts, feelings, and social wellbeing.”  Mental health is not a separate part of our health because it can have an effect on our physical health as well.

Unfortunately, a lot of stereotypes and inaccurate information about mental illness means it is very misunderstood.  Many people think being mentally unwell means someone is dangerous and unsafe towards others.

In many racial and ethnic minority populations, having a mental health problem is considered a source of embarrassment, a weakness, or personal problem someone needs to just get over.    The stereotypes about mental health or disregard for mental health can lead to people becoming very ill or even dying because they were too afraid to get the help they needed.
