Sewage treatment systems (STS) are used to treat wastewater from household plumbing fixtures (toilets, shower, laundry, etc.) through both natural and technological processes when a sanitary sewer system is not available. If properly maintained, a septic system can provide long- term, effective treatment of wastewater. If your system isn’t maintained, it may result in costly repairs or replacement of the STS.
The average lifespan of an STS is 20-25 years.
Visit our Homeowner Resource Page for more information on STS maintenance.
SCPH issues permits and conducts inspections of STS to ensure that they are operational and to prevent contamination of water sources. Permit and inspections types include:
- New and Replacement STS
- Building and Zoning Evaluations
- Point of Sale Inspections
- Operation Permits
- Complaint Inspections
Sanitary Sewer Connections
For questions about sewer connection, including cost estimates and permits, please contact the local sewer authority that services your neighborhood.

City of Akron Utilities Business Office
SCPH’s role when connecting a residence to sanitary sewer is to ensure the septic system is properly abandoned. The contractor connecting the home into the sewer can perform the abandonment. Once the system is abandoned, the Abandonment Report must be submitted to SCPH with the appropriate fee.
